The Cultural Advantage: A New Model for Succeeding with Global Teams by Mijnd Huijser

It is all too common for people in international groups to misunderstand each other, either in a spectacular fashion or, more often, a subtle way that impedes progress. With over 13 years of training international and intercultural groups, Mijnd Huijser has developed, tested and refined a powerful tool that helps overcome the obstacles inherent in global teams. While most of the experience comes from multinational organizations, the insights are applicable on a national level, an organizational level and even a small unit level when differing cultures cooperate. Huijser's Model of Freedom provides a visual and practical method for understanding oneself and others, converting tension to energy and leveraging the advantage of culture.

Great Expectations and the Need for Coaching

A new era has evolved where it is the employees who are demanding qualities from their place of employment that lies deeper than free gym membership or a desk with a view. Employees all over the western world are screaming out for communication, diversity, support and an understanding of the world around them. Chris Webb, who is an adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and development has spoken about the importance of HR in terms of company reputation and employment law. "When managers treat people in a cavalier manner, there's a high risk of going to a tribunal" says Webb.

Political correctness and respect are no longer seen as a bonus but looked at as a must have within the business world! In recent years business and its reputation has plummeted. In 2002, the Wall Street Journal asked Europeans aged 14 and over what they thought of business. Only 40 per cent of young people were able to envisage themselves in business when they complete their education.

So where do these negative impressions evolve from?

Is this perhaps an indication of a movement in society that has not been equally matched with a movement in business? The new generation, is slipping through the fingers and the loss of talent is immeasurable.

Business can not stand independently, without great leaders, it will fail.

So what's needed? Diversity? Inspirational leaders? A greater awareness of the world around them? Training? Coaching?

We offer coaching and training excellence which encompasses all of the above.

The link between Diversity, Performance and Creativity

Diversity is more than gender, race or religion it encompasses the diversity of minds. It is only with these strong and abundant differences in backgrounds and ideologies that a company can truly reach its creative potential.

When asked of what is missing from UK boardrooms Virginia Bottomley (Executive Director, Odgers Ray & Berndtson) said "it's not that there's something missing, but there is room for more diversity on the board - it's a great business driver. Good ideas and creativity comes from differences".

The pervasive stereotyping of women's capacity for leadership is still visible when looking at the board rooms often resembling gentleman's clubs. Stanford university psychologist Claude Steele studied groups around a qualifying exam for graduate school. The first group was told that the test usually showed the differences in ability between men and women. The women in the first group scored appreciably lower than men. Gender differences were not mentioned to the second group and these women and men scored equally well. The same effect occurred for black participants. The active ingredient in lowering women's scores or those of black people was debilitating anxiety triggered by the threatening stereotype. As Martin Luther King, Jr. put so eloquently "Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance".

What can be said then of the importance of diversity and its undeniable link to performance? Companies must be educated on reversing the negative stereotypes of all groups to enable their workforce to shine.

eve-olution has many years of experience in dealing with this politically sensitive issue and various tailor made solutions are available to enable your company to thrive and diversify.
